Harpsichord after Michael Mietke, Berlin, 1710.

spacer Harpsichord after Michael Mietke, Berlin, 1710.
Click on the image above for an enlarged, detailed version.
Scholars have known for many years that J. S. Bach procured a harpsichord by Mietke for use at the court of Cöthen, but it was long believed that no instruments by him had survived. In the mid 1980s, however, two instruments in the Charlottenburg palace in Berlin were attributed to Mietke. A third signed instrument has since been located in Sweden, verifying the attribution of the other two.

I currently offer a single-manual instrument in Mietke's style, based on the Swedish example. It has a warm, direct sound, with moderate sustain. The bass is powerful, but with a more even resonance than the late French instruments; the treble is full and sweet. This is a versatile instrument that works well for a wide range of music, and which serves nicely as an alternative to the ubiquitous French models.

Specification:
GG-d3, 8' 8'. Case in walnut, or with a painted finish. 218 x 92 cm (86 x 36 in).
